Against the backdrop of the sixth consecutive UK base rate hold, on Thursday, 9 May, Deutsche Numis’ Ulick Burke, Director, Equity Sales, hosted an insightful panel discussion around the outlook for the UK market and impactful investor relations from a portfolio management perspective.

Looking ahead to potential political change in the near-term and hopes of pension reform to reverse the recent trend of UK equity outflows, Georgina Hamilton, Fund Manager at Polar Capital, was keen to emphasise that the ‘BRISA’ (British ISA) could also help to fortify London’s future as a premier listing venue.

Meanwhile, Peter Davies, Portfolio Manager at Lansdowne Partners, pointed out that the outflows were unsurprising, given the very challenging geopolitical backdrop and, simultaneously, the greatest energy and interest rate shocks the UK economy has seen in recent decades.

Nonetheless, he felt we could now be close to an inflection point with the extremely high quality of many UK-listed companies, stagflation in reverse and political risk potentially diminishing, making more domestic investment likely, whether this be through advocacy or policy reform.

The panel highlighted five key points where investor relations teams can really add value for portfolio managers:

• A clear and frank discussion that includes the negatives as opposed to pure advocacy
• Flexibility around additional meetings to revisit numbers
• More information to help build up a clear picture of the company
• Being on top of the details given AI is now being used to cross-check information
• Asking portfolio managers about their processes to help understand which companies are the right fit for them.

Thank you to our panellists and guests for making this such an enjoyable event.
